Group Legal Counsel (UK 1074) - Feltham, London , United Kingdom
Group Legal Counsel is a role within Perform’s Group Legal team. The Group’s rapid expansion into new product and service segments as well as new geographic territories places a continued need on its legal function to grow to support the needs of this dynamic and exciting business.
Perform’s central Group Legal function has responsibility for all matters which are not specifically dealt with within the Content, Media and DAZN divisions. This includes the contracting of technology and procurement services and managing a range of regulatory, intellectual property, litigation, property and employment matters (with assistance from outside counsel, where necessary).
As well as being involved with a great variety of commercial work within Perform’s central Group function, the successful candidate will also be involved with a wide range of commercial work from across Perform’s divisions: (i) Content, the division responsible for the collection, production, and distribution of data, editorial and video content for sports competitions across the world; (ii) Media, the division responsible for Perform’s global and local sports media properties and platforms; and (iii) the recently-launched live sports service, DAZN. The role will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work, and take the lead on, various commercial legal matters. In particular, the candidate will play a key role in the acquisition of rights for use and exploitation across Perform’s product lines and services.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a wide skill and knowledge base. This role represents a fantastic opportunity for a media or commercial lawyer to move into the sports industry and an unparalleled chance to work across the range of Perform’s product lines and services and have a close involvement with the global rights process for some of the world’s biggest sports.
From negotiating digital media rights deals and strategic partnerships with some of the world’s biggest sports governing bodies and agencies, to advising on formal responses to tender and RFP processes, the role will require you to be proactive, flexible and creative.
A large portion of your workload will be the drafting and negotiating of content acquisition / rights agreements in relation to various sports properties throughout the world using Perform’s template agreements or, more typically, terms provided by rightsholders.
You will also have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of commercial matters, which could include contracting of technology and procurement services and managing a range of regulatory, intellectual property, litigation, property and employment matters (with assistance from outside counsel, where necessary).
Strong PQE (although aptitude and personality culture-fit will be given significantly greater weight over PQE in assessment) having trained at and subsequently worked in a highly successful and recognised commercial team either in private practice, or a strong in-house team in the TMT sector
Significant experience of a wide range of commercial contracts and arrangements with good level of direct contact with clients. Experience of drafting and negotiating content acquisition / rights agreements desirable
Excellent technical legal skills, especially first-class drafting and interpretative abilities
Highly commercial and constructive negotiating and problem-solving abilities
Experience of working on matters with a moderate to high degree of autonomy
An ability to juggle a large workload and rapidly shifting priorities
A well-rounded personality with the capacity to work effectively with others from a wide range of professional and non-professional disciplines
A willingness to operate out of his or her comfort zone and a willingness to play a proactive role in developing Perform’s legal function
