Lifting children out of poverty and advancing gender equality through the power of sport.

Plan International UK and Perform have worked together since November 2013 to deliver ‘Empowerment through Sport’ in five districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana states in India. The project promoted sports and skills for all children, and gave marginalised children the opportunity to play, garner a greater appreciation for the importance of education and develop vital knowledge and life skills to be able to make informed, independent decisions about their lives.

Together we have raised an incredible £95,000 across the group, in addition to the company’s support.

  • 12,895 children reached including 156 boys and girls with disabilties, through sports, life skills and awareness sessions
  • 2,431 sessions on health, gender, self-awareness and life skills across the 5 districts
  • 28 tailored play and skills sessions for children with special needs
  • Sports and playing fields constructed or rehabilitated for 42 schools
  • Sports equipment will be issued to all schools involved in the project by November 2017, benefiting 25,000 children

Beginning January 2018, we are going to take the successes and learnings from Empowerment through Sport in India to Teresina, Brazil, to support boys and girls to effectively challenge social norms and encourage support for gender equality and girls’ rights in their communities using the medium of sport.

How will we effect change?

  • Continuous engagement through football & education
  • Construction or refurbishment of 10 football pitches across 10 communities
  • Weekly life skills and football sessions for 340 girls and boys from 10 communities, through which we will transform their attitudes, behaviours and practices around gender equality
  • Annual football tournaments
